James 4:1–17Berean Sessions

The Most Common Prayer Problems

Taught by Anazao

the teaching opens the Thursday Berean night on James chapter 4 with a title drawn straight from the text: the most common prayer problems. He begins where James begins, what causes quarrels and fights among you? Don't they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don't have, so you scheme and kill; you covet but cannot obtain, so you fight and war. Then he names the three prayer problems James exposes in verses 2–3: you don't ask; you ask but don't receive because you ask with wrong motives, wanting pleasures for yourselves; and you ask for the wrong things altogether. For God to answer prayer, He needs access to your motives. From verse 4 the session turns fierce: friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God. You cannot be a friend of the world and a friend of God at the same time, it is spiritual adultery, the bride cheating on the Bridegroom. the teaching presses the room with practical self-examination: when last did you fellowship with God? Are you flirting with the world every chance you get? He illustrates divided loyalty from his own university days, worldly music Monday through Saturday, Kirk Franklin on Sunday, and lands the line: no day is the world's day; every day ought to be the Lord's day. Verse 6. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble; it takes humility to qualify for grace. Verses 7–8, humble yourselves before God, resist the devil and he will flee, come close to God and He will come close to you. Resisting is not watching, it is intentional refusal to let the devil pitch his tent. Intimacy with God is your duty to initiate. Wash your hands, purify your hearts, refuse divided loyalty. Verses 9–10, let there be tears, humble yourselves before the Lord and He will lift you up in honor. God will never lift up a person who has lifted up himself. The session closes through verses 11–17, don't speak evil against each other, don't boast about tomorrow, and remember: if you know the right thing to do and don't do it, that is sin.

This is the Thursday Berean Session of week three in the James series, recorded May 22 at 8:00 PM West African time, the middle night of three on James chapters 3–5, following Wednesday's 'The Spring Never Lies' on James 3 and leading into Friday's 'Our Most Powerful Resource' on James 5. the teaching frames the entire chapter around prayer problems rooted in internal war, worldliness, and pride, and the session carries the Berean series burden of defending faith in a corrupt generation while pressing practical holiness, divided loyalty, humility before resistance, and intimacy initiated by the believer.

Key Points

01

James 4:1: what causes quarrels and fights? Evil desires at war within you. The root of conflict is internal before it is external.

02

Three most common prayer problems (verses 2–3): you don't ask; you ask but don't receive because your motives are wrong; you ask for the wrong things. For God to answer prayer, He needs access to your motives.

03

Verse 4: friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God. You cannot be a friend of the world and a friend of God simultaneously, it is the bride cheating on the Bridegroom.

04

The world is anything that stands against God's way. Divided loyalty shows up in what gains your attention, what you spend time on, and whether intimacy with God is real or performative.

05

the testimony: worldly music all week, gospel on Sunday, a classical example of divided loyalty. What enters you is not lyrics but the spirit behind what you listen to.

06

No day is the world's day. Every day ought to be the Lord's day, not just Sunday.

07

Verse 6: God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humility is required to qualify for grace.

08

Verse 7: humble yourselves before God, then resist the devil. Resisting is intentional refusal, not passive watching. If you let the devil take a room, he takes the house.

09

Verse 8: come close to God and He will come close to you. You initiate intimacy; it is your duty, not God's alone.

10

Verse 10: humble yourselves before the Lord and He will lift you up in honor. God will never lift up a person who has lifted up himself.

11

Verses 11–17: don't speak evil against each other even when hurt; don't boast about tomorrow; if you know the right thing and don't do it, that is sin.
